Sports massage is concerned with the management, manipulation and rehabilitation of soft tissue of the body including muscles, tendons, ligaments and nerves.

The techniques used by sports massage therapists have been developed to ensure effective and efficient results are gained from each massage given.

Your first treatment will last for one hour and will include an initial assessment. This will aim to:

  • Identify the injury
  • Clearly inform you what the treatment will involve
  • Indicate the number of required treatments
  • You may also be given appropriate exercises to undertake in between treatments to aid recovery
  • If a client requires regular maintenance treatments, there are pre-paid booking options that offer discounted rates

  • Increase or decrease muscle length

If you are a sports performer, of any level, a sports massage can be beneficial at various stages of participation.

For example:

  • The conditioning / training phase
  • Pre competition
  • Inter competition
  • Post competition
  • Post travel
  • Injury prevention
  • Injury recovery
  • Regardless of your experiences in sport or exercise, whether you exercise socially or compete to an international level - sports massage may have something to offer you.

Sports Massage Therapy is an excellent way of relieving tension & tiredness allowing the body to relax. Examples of sports injuries that can benefit are:

  • Sprains
  • Strains
  • Achilles tendonitis
  • Runners’ knee
  • shin splints
  • Tennis/Golfer’s elbow
  • plantar fasciitis
  • piriformis syndrome

How can sports massage therapy benefit you?

Postural imbalances: typical areas affected by bad posture are:

  • Shoulder / neck/ upper back pain
  • Lower back pain
  • Referred pain in legs

Improve muscular flexibility:

Sports massage stretches and mobilises muscles in order to improve the movement of an individual muscle or set of muscle groups. The breakdown of any muscle tightness, especially between the muscle fibres and fascial layers, will help with muscular flexibility. Carrying out stretches will also aid the increase in muscular flexibility

Sports Injury / Rehabilitation: are divided into 3 distinct stages.

  • Acute: refers to the first 24-48hrs of an injury.
  • Sub-acute: generally 48hrs after an injury.
  • Chronic: anything after 3 weeks. If left untreated can cause muscular imbalance and affect range of movement and function.

Following injury, whether through sport of everyday activities, the body goes through changes. Tissue damage and inflammation is followed by adaptations by the body to protect and limit further damage. Muscular discomfort can take place, it is vital that the correct treatment is given to achieve a full recovery and restore lifestyle balance.
